I was planning to write this post about a sandwich I had this week. Ham and cheese, if you’re wondering.

But then I read the news, and everything changed.

This week in a prominent UK Sunday Newspaper, in the sports section, there were:

Basically nothing worth reading about. And not a single article on a record breaking sporting event that took place in the Alps over the weekend.

If you know anything about me you might be surprised to see me listing off information about the sporting news.

Two things in life I have significantly less interest in than most other people are 1) watching sports and 2) Reading the news.

I never got much value out of watching other people do things I could be doing myself. Not to mention that very little happens in most of the popular sports most of the time. One goal in 90 minutes? Not my idea of a thrill ride.

Even the sports I loved growing up, like snowboarding and climbing, rarely delivered much value for me on screen.

Professional level climbing is the kind of sport that is ridiculously difficult in practice, and incredibly dull to observe. It wasn’t until fairly recently that climbing filmmakers realised that a good film is made by a good story, and not just shots of someone moving slowly across different rocks.

At least snow sports films have people flying through the air over a pumping soundtrack.

Basketball has always been the one sport I’ll happily watch. Once or twice I’ve even willingly spent my own money to attend a live game.

Overall, I’d rather be outside.
